Tessera's FotoNation Technology Ships in Fujitsu Microelectronics' Milbeaut Chips

Innovative Image Enhancement Solution for Face Detection and Tracking Provides Superior Image Quality and Camera Performance

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 2008--Tessera Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:TSRA), a provider of transformational technologies that enable innovation in next-generation electronics, today announced that Fujitsu Microelectronics Limited's Milbeaut chipsets, which incorporate the FotoNation(R) FaceTracker image enhancement solution from Tessera, are now shipping.

The FotoNation FaceTracker solution identifies and tracks in real-time more than 10 human faces simultaneously. It provides in-camera face detection and tracking for digital still cameras (DSCs), mobile phone cameras and other camera-enabled devices. With this technology, Fujitsu Microelectronics' latest chipset will enable digital camera and mobile phone manufacturers to provide smaller, lighter, slimmer devices featuring high-resolution imaging. The Milbeaut chipsets incorporate hardware acceleration for the FotoNation FaceTracker solution, enabling approximately 10 times (10x) improved speed performance over the software-only implementation.

"By incorporating the FotoNation technology from Tessera into our Milbeaut chipset, we are able to offer our customers additional capabilities to optimize camera exposure, focus and color balance settings," said Tom Miyake, general manager of the Imaging System Solution Division of Fujitsu Microelectronics Limited. "It will enable consumers to take better quality pictures with their mobile phones and digital cameras with little or no extra effort."

The FotoNation FaceTracker solution tracks faces in the camera viewfinder, detecting more than 10 faces in one image in as little as 0.1 seconds. It continues to track them moving throughout the image, even in rotation or profile. The camera uses this "face data" to adjust image capture settings such as exposure and focus, which results in human subjects that are well-lit and well-focused, even when backlit or off-center. The technology also includes face orientation data as a simple solution for auto-rotation without additional hardware.

"As a 'one stop shop' provider of transformational imaging technologies, Tessera enables our customers to offer advanced features to the market, whether it is in the form of cell phone cameras or DSCs," said Mike Bereziuk, executive vice president, Imaging & Optics, Tessera. "We see great potential market growth fueled by leading image processing chipset manufacturers such as Fujitsu Microelectronics Limited, as well as new opportunities in the wireless, consumer and computing product sectors."

The FotoNation FaceTracker solution is currently available for licensing from Tessera. For more information, please go to www.tessera.com.
